Mad about Science - II

Our Dolphins worked through the holidays, running their experiments and collecting data to prove thier hypothesises.  Last week their hard work came to fruition in our Science Fair.  Students went through a first round of judging in their classrooms and the top projects from each room moved on to the "finals".
In third grade, teams of students worked together on their experiments.  In fourth and fifth grades, the work was done individually.  Our final projects included experiments about the effect of different ingredients on soda "fountains", the various characteristics of gum, the best glue to use, how to keep bananas from rotting and what makes your teeth yellow.
On January 19 a team of judges interviewed each scientist using a judging rubric. The students had to explain why they asked their question, how they designed their experiment, the experimental process and what their conclusions were.  Projects were also judges on the necessary components of a backboard.  After three long hours of interviews, consultation and tallying of points, we arrived at our winners in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.
The team of judges was very impressed by the work of our Dolphins and how they used the scientific method to work to answer their questions!
