What do you get when you combine twelve great fifth graders with one hundred and twenty two words from the dictionary? The Greenfield Spelling Bee!
Last Tuesday our twelve class champions faced off in the cafeteria at 9:00 AM. Two judges and a "beemaster" kept things rolling for almost an hour. You could hear the relief from the contestants when the first word was called - "pill"! Everyone relaxed a little as the first and second round found everyone still in the contest. Then came the trickier words and a couple of homonyms! The spelling got tougher and some adults were heard to say: "How DO you spell that?"
When the dust settled, Greenfield had a new champion - Aislinn McDonald who will represent us at the district championship. Elijah Michel or second place winner will represent Greenfield if Aislinn is unable to compete. Third place went to Destinie Chea who is also standing by to represent Greenfield.
Our guest judges from Southside Middle School were very impressed by our students and surprised when they realized that the winning word of the contest was the 122nd word called!
